GOLF CAREER:

Herbert (Herb) B. Smith is a Professional Golfer and he is currently participating in the T.J. American Senior 2007 Tour.

BACKGROUND FOR HERBERT B. SMITH, COLLEGIATE / PROFESSIONAL CAREERS

Herb Smith's golf career extends over thirty years.  In 1969 he attended Florida A&M University on a golf scholarship, where he earned a degree in Business Administration and was a four year letterman.  As a senior, Herb missed a NCAA invitation birth by a sudden death play-off, which would have been the first for Florida A&M university at that time.  However, he led his team to four S.I.A.C. Championships.

Herb Smith officially retired on March 28, 1999 from Miami-Dade County.  He retired early in order to pursue his life long dream of becoming a professional golfer on the Senior PGA Tour.  Herb plans to attend the PGA Senior Qualifying School in November, in hopes of earning his playing privileges on the Senior PGA tour for 2007.

Herb Smith is presently homing his skills on the IGTA Tour, Chamption Monday Qualifiers, and also plans to pursue the European Senior Tour Qualifing School.  Some of his accomplishments are as follows:

  • In 1976, Herb played in his first professional Golf mini-tour event, winning the second event of that series by 5 shots.  Current PGA notables such as Mark McCumber, J.C. Goosie, and Dick Mass were among the participants.

  • From 1977 to 1978, Herb was the assistant professional at Babe Zaharias and Rogers Parkk Golf Courses in Tampa, Florida.  Thereafter, the obligations raising a family prompted Herb to put his professional golf career on hold.

  • Herb was a member of the executive committee that created the Gus Machado Senior Classic, now the PGA Senior Tour Royal Caribbean Classic.

  • In 1992, Herb had the opportunity to continue his professional golf career part time, by participating as a senior on the South Florida Mini Tour.  Between 1992 to 1998, Herb won 5 Mini Tour events.

  • In 1996 and 1997, Herb received player exemptions into the PGA Senior Tour's Royal Caribbean Classic.  In july 1999, two months after retirement, Herb played on the Classic Tour, and placed in the top 10, five out of the 10 events played.

  • On June 30th, Herb entered in the Tony Jacklin American Senior 2000 Tour.  He finished in the top ten in 7 out of 10 events played, with a second place finish being his best.

  • Herb is a member of the Titliest and Footjoy Worldwide Minority Promotional Program.

  • Herb's golf club affiliation is the Country Club of Miami.

  • Herb is now incorporated, and his company's name is Herb Smith Golf Professional Inc.
